About Us
“Our mission is to empower women who have faced sex trafficking, homelessness, poverty, and abuse by providing a safe and nurturing environment.”
F.R.E.E. is a non-profit organization founded by Yomah T. Barjibo and is dedicated to creating a facility designed to meet the unique needs of women experiencing homelessness and poverty, all within a trauma-informed framework. The facility will feature enhanced safety measures and will be operated entirely by female staff, fostering a sense of belonging for our sisters who have faced abused. F.R.E.E is primarily focused on serving women in Liberia which is a country located in West Africa.
Liberian Civil War
The Liberian Civil War was a devastating conflict that took place between 1989 and 2003, the roots of the conflict stretch back to complex political, ethnic, and economic tensions.
Liberia, founded in 1822 by freed American slaves, has a unique history. The settlers, known as Americo-Liberians, dominated the country politically and economically. The indigenous population, which had lived in the region for centuries, was marginalized and excluded from power. This led to longstanding resentment and ethnic tension among the indigenous people that would later fuel the war.
The war evolved into a brutal and chaotic struggle between numerous factions. Ethnic violence, human rights abuses, and the use of child soldiers were widespread. Women were raped and murdered. Families were torn apart.
The Liberian Civil War devastated the economy, with widespread poverty, a collapsed infrastructure, a generation of children traumatized by the war, corruption and political instability. An estimated 250,000 people lost their lives, and millions were displaced.
We believe that our current situation is not our final destination, and we are committed to taking one step at a time.
While there are organizations addressing poverty, few focus exclusively on women and even fewer focus on women in Liberia. F.R.E.E. will fill this gap, offering a comprehensive solution to empower women. We provide an integrated approach combining faith-based support with essential services. At the heart of our approach is a deep respect for our sisters, centered around dignified care.
