Christiana Chulu's story begins in Pleebo, Liberia. The majority of her life was spent in the Ivory Coast, her family forced to flee their homeland due to the destructive Liberian Civil War. This traumatic event transformed them into refugees, resulting in a challenging upbringing shared with her single mother and cherished grandparents.
Life presented considerable difficulties for Christiana and her family. They frequently endured hunger, lacking sufficient food and clothing, a burden that weighed heavily on her mother as she cared for eight children. Christiana witnessed her mother's sacrifices, including selling her own clothes to provide for her children, a stark reminder of their daily struggles. Christiana understands the harsh reality of hunger intimately; often, she would climb trees to gather fruits or wander through the community hoping to find someone cooking palm butter, in search of palmkakana—the hard-shelled nuts that occasionally offered a rare treat.
Despite these hardships, Christiana is grateful for the grace of God, which has enabled her to persevere and live to this day. The difficulties she endured compelled her to make desperate choices for survival, decisions she isn’t proud of, including entering into relationships with older men for sustenance. This led to an unplanned pregnancy, and she faced profound heartache when she lost her second child at birth. The risks to her own life during that time were immense, yet she was fortunate to survive, and through God's mercy, she went on to safely give birth to her other children.
Today, Christiana is a proud mother of five amazing children and feels truly blessed to have had the opportunity to come to America with them. Their lives have improved significantly; however, her heart aches for the women in Liberia who continue to struggle without shelter, food, or basic necessities. Having personally experienced the pangs of hunger, she feels a deep compulsion to act and help alleviate their suffering.
This is why Christiana passionately wishes to be a part of FREE. She desires to be a voice for those women and make a meaningful difference in their lives, sharing a path toward hope and healing. Together, she believes they can work to create a better future for those who are still facing the struggles she once knew.
